Is a new band better than old faithful?

I was introduced to the fungasm of carnival in 2005.

From that time tIll now I have considered only one band for my trini carnival fix…Tribe.

The memories Tribe has given me I will carry with me, and cherish, long after I have grown old and frail (I will actually tell my grandkids about it).

The last two years though have given me reason to pause and reconsider where my loyalties lie. Even the mightiest empires rise then fall….has tribe passed it’s zenith?

The last two years (especially 2010) were my worst trini carnival experiences (still pretty good by any other standard though). The vibes just weren’t there in the band if you ask me and the crowd was just insane at times. Is this really so or am I just getting used to the tribe package and mystique? Is the grass greener on the other side? Is new band just innately better than old band?

Well Yuma, for me at least, is the fresh, shiny new band. Full of enthusiasm and hunger. Willing to do whatever it takes to get me into their fold (maybe I should rephrase that). The costumes look hot and I hear the vibes were right.

Is it true or just the illusion that newness brings. Should I stay with old faithful…the comfort of knowing what to expect?Should I take the risk of leaving my comfort zone and possibly getting what the duck got?

And what about Bliss…Island people…Spice? What says you?

I’m going to T&T for the first time ever for carnival 2012. I’ve never been a carnival anywhere in the world before so this should really be a treat. I’ve been considering the same mas bands you mentioned (i.e. Island People, Tribe, Bliss, Spice, and Yuma). If a decision had to be made now, Island People would be my choice. The costumes look great and the women are “fungasmic” (to steal a Trini expression). Post what you decide to do.
