ELECTRIC KARNIVAL.   EDM for us, by us! Let’s try something new.

For years I have been seeing videos from the EDM scene, mostly from large festivals in Europe and around the world, and boy, does it ever look like a good time.  In my mind it really looks like the equivalent of a carnival level of vibes.   I also really like some of the EDM beats, as they at times have a very similar feel to them as Soca does.  At the same time there is the worry of going to one of these festivals and having to endure hour after hour of music that I don’t know and may not necessarily have ANY connection to.

ELECTRIC KARNIVAL is the solution to that issue.  Held in the lush tropical environment of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park the one-day festival is a culture clash uniting Reggae, Dancehall, Soca, and EDM while orchestrating strong elements on Caribbean Carnival and J’ouvert. From soca to dancehall and reggae, the EDM will have Caribbean roots that WE as WEST INDIANS can relate to and identify with.
This inaugural event promises to deliver an entire day of dancing, colored powder and visual stimulation complemented by headliners Walshy Fire of Major Lazer and top Soca music artist Bunji Garlin. Other acts include Vision Sound (Ape Drums and Silent Addy), LL Cool Blaze, 4B, Brenmar, Slink, Private Ryan, Electric Punanny, 1stKlase, Willy Chin, Jeff Molner, Ryan Sayeed, Kyle De Souza, and more.

Take a listen to the kind of beats you can expect by one of the showcase artists below!

ELECTRIC KARNIVAL currently has 15 brand name Caribbean DJs and artists billed to perform with more to be announced soon!

Take a look at their website HERE

I talked to one of the promoters and it was obvious that this event was born out of a desire to bring unity to the Caribbean community, as too often competition between carnival bands brings a small but noticable level of division.  This event unifies all those with caribbean roots as well as non caribbean lovers of EDM who may want to dip a toe into caribbean culture.

The event is only one day this year but this is only the start.  The plan is to eventually grow it into the giant festival that it deserves to be!

In the summer, which is kinda an off season for Carnival here in Jamaica its going to be nice to try something totally new and different.   New experiences like this may be the future of growing caribbean music beyond its current confines!
